Individual Sessions
I offer individual Deep Bodywork sessions at my therapy space in Hove. Public transport links are good and parking is easy.
In a Deep Bodywork session you are encouraged to participate actively in the work. We will talk about particular issues or concerns you may have, before working with the body. The emphasis is on making connections between body-held and mind-held beliefs.
The work can include dialogue, body awareness, breathwork and movement, as well as the possibility of working directly with the body through touch and deeper strokes. In working with the body, great care is taken to ensure that you are comfortable - both physically and emotionally. Strokes are given directly onto the skin where possible, but you are welcome to be draped, or keep on as much clothing as feels right for you.
The work is undertaken in an atmosphere of deep awareness - adding the aspect of spirit to the body-mind connection. Attention is given to breath, posture and body energy, and we explore how these are linked to beliefs, memories and feelings. As issues or feelings arise in the work, I will make suggestions about ways in which they could be explored further.
See Deep Bodywork for an explanation of the therapeutic approach.
Two Additional Options:
I also offer two specialised forms of body therapy: Postural Integration and Authentic Movement.
Postural Integration
Postural Integration is a systematic approach to deep bodywork which aims to release deep and chronic muscular tension, and to harmonise this release with the freeing of emotions and breathing. Over a course of 12 sessions, PI works from the outer layers of the body towards the core, using deep strokes and focussed body awareness.
PI provides a framework for visiting the main muscular and fascial systems of your body, first stretching and opening, and later probing more deeply into the mysteries they contain. We will look at your overall posture, work with parts of your body that seem to hold particular interest, and link these to the body-held feelings and beliefs that emerge. Final sessions are concerned with integrating the new understandings and ways of being into a wider and more inclusive sense of your body, mind and spirit.
Although PI has a sequential structure, it is not a rigid formula. It is flexible enough to deal with issues as they come to light. It is like a journey into yourself; on the way you will discover deeply-held blocks and old patterns which are ready to be released, and find new ways to let your energy and spirit flow more freely.
The work involves deep, strong strokes which can be painful, particularly in areas where stuck energy may be held and released. However you have the veto on where we choose to work, and how deeply.
PI was originally developed by the bodywork therapist Jack Painter in the US. It is a progression of Rolfing, using deep tissue manipulation, breathwork, energetic and gestalt techniques to work with the body-mind as an integrated whole. More information on PI is available on
www.posturalintegration.info.
A full 12-session course of PI can be booked for £550. Alternatively you may wish to pay per session, in which case my usual bodywork full session rate applies (see below).
Authentic Movement
I use Authentic Movement in groupwork but it is also a valuable tool in one-to-one therapy. The client pays attention to inner impulses and allows the body to move in response. We work with the sensations, feelings, thoughts, and images which arise from the unconscious, directly through the body. AM is particularly useful in exploring areas where words and ‘rational’ thought are not immediately accessible. See
Authentic Movement page for more on the background to AM.
This work can take place in the relatively compact space of my therapy room, which is laid with mats. Or (at additional cost) we can hire a small studio for sessions, to allow wider freedom of movement and a solid floor.
Booking an interview…
Before agreeing to work, I offer a free exploratory interview, so you can see the space where we work and find out more about what might be involved. If you do decide to try Deep Bodywork, I recommend an initial commitment to a series of four sessions, to help you to gain a full sense of the approach. After this, you are welcome to schedule sessions as regularly, or occasionally, as feels right to you.
The cost per session is:
Full session (up to 2 hours): £55
Medium session (up to 1½ hours): £45
Short session (up to 1 hour): £35
